Mingo Fishtrap

Growing up in a musically inclined family, Chip began drum lessons at 5 and piano lessons at 10. His grandfather, who in his younger years, played drums in vaudeville groups throughout the Midwest, influenced him highly with the gift of his first “real” 30's style "trap set" at age 4. "I was fortunate to grow up in a musical family, my Dad singing in church and other choral groups, Mom playing piano and 2 sisters that both played flute and sang so, of course, I instantly gravitated towards the drums."

After a year at the University of Illinois, he accepted a performance scholarship to the Berklee College of Music, studying privately with the likes of
Bob Tamagni, Ed Uribe, Larry Finn and Steve Wilkes and percussionist/congero extraordinaire, Giovanni Hidalgo. "In between slices at Supreme's Pizza, to blow off steam, and because of a lack of any typical college social life, I put together a 16-piece r&b/funk band to play around the school, and learned a valuable life lesson, that having 5 Berklee student singers in a band, is, at least, 4 too many."

After graduating from Berklee, he attended the University of North Texas on a jazz scholarship for 2 years of graduate school playing in the 2:00 jazz lab band, the
champion PASIC NT drumline, "Doc's" 1:00 percussion ensemble, and the steel drum band, where he first met Mingo Fishtrap's original drummer, Scott Davis.

Moving to Los Angeles in 1995 he landed several pop artist tours, highlights including performances at the Fleet Pavilion (now Bank of America Pavilion) in Boston, the Beacon Theater in New York with Madonna, touring in support of The Wallflowers for a couple months and a performance at the Lilith Fair.

"I knew
Scott Davis (Scotty D), Mingo Fishtrap's original drummer, all too well, from the percussion program at North Texas, and always dug watching him play with Mingo at Rick's place in Denton, TX. While Scott was trying to finish up college and I was still living in L.A., I got a call to help him out by sub-drumming a few Mingo shows for him and eventually Scott asked me if I wanted to formerly audition for the band as they were about to make a move to Austin, TX. In late 1999 after making 100% sure he wasn't going to change his mind, I graciously accepted the offer at a meeting with Roger on the roof deck of Cool Beans on Fry Street and made the move from LA to Austin, TX."

“Being a part of Mingo Fishtrap has given me the opportunity to create, record and tour the country and elsewhere, performing soul-filled music that I can really get behind, with a group of truly talented friends that are a family.”
